George R. LeBlanc- Excerpt from "Le Moniteur Acadien"
Originally from Memramcook, New Brunswick, celebrated his 100th birthday on 6 January 2023. He is one of the last living veterans from the Second World War in the Acadian region. Born in 1923, he served overseas during WWII; over the years his family grew with seven children, ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Though he doesn’t talk much about wartime memories, his community recognises him as a symbol of courage, service and Acadian pride. At the celebration, family, friends and community representatives gathered at the local seniors’ club in the Memramcook valley. The municipality invited the public to send congratulatory cards, dozens were sent. The mayor of Memramcook described LeBlanc as someone engaged in his community, who gave back through volunteer work, and noted that his life after the war is also full of admirable qualities: “He had to have seen traumatic things in Europe, but when you see the family he created and the success he has had post-war, he’s a very strong person.”
